Husband-wife photography team looks to be a perfect match for local weddings Reviewing Nick & Naomi Law, Owners of Pure Photo
Husband-wife team, Nick and Naomi Law, say they're a perfect match - for each other, for business, and particularly, for shooting weddings. Together, they own and operate Pure Photo, a newer Guelph area photography company that brings two different photography styles, perspectives, artistic visions - and of course, photographers - to your wedding day. They offer full day coverage (from dawn to the bouquet toss), unlimited locations, custom and pre-set packages and a fully operational studio and framing shop.
This professional couple looks poised for success and yet also knows how to keep things small. Enough. While limiting the amount of weddings they do each year, Pure Photo says they're able to focus on their couples and their craft. For Nick and Naomi, work is still fun, prices can be kept reasonable and their brides and grooms feel taken care of. Whether they have to climb a tree or wade in water, Nick and Naomi admit they'll do whatever it takes to make sure they get a perfect shot – because nothing is as rewarding as making others happy on their wedding day.
We met with Nick and Naomi at their studio to find out more about their seemingly destined-to-be popular company, and to confirm what their brides were telling us - that Pure Photo is worth every penny, and every memory...
Personally speaking... Pure Photo started the way many photographers do, by following a passion. When Nick found Naomi – the love of his life – it was their own wedding that first sparked an interest and passion for the wedding industry. They did some wedding photography for close friends. "We were told that we should be doing this full time," he admitted. And so together, Nick and Naomi began studying the technical and practical side of photography and business, having already uncovered their own natural artistic talent and vision.
"We were mostly self and privately trained (by artistic and business mentors)," Nick told us, and he also took Photography courses at Fleming College in Peterborough, which he says adds structure to his self taught photographic abilities. He then passed on most of what he has learned to Naomi, developing her already present natural talent. "Naomi has a strong administrative background allowing for smooth flow and effective direction throughout the day." This also makes her a perfectly matched business partner, says Nick.
With a few more weddings successfully captured, Nick and Naomi say they "learned methods to take a day that has potential for chaos, and turn it into a very simple, fun, classy and efficient event. With that, Pure Photo was born."
This husband and wife team officially opened their business in 2008, but they have been shooting weddings since 2006. They have had a lot of different jobs over the years, but told us that nothing fulfilled them as making their couples happy on their wedding day. "Weddings are fun and exciting and it is always a joy to be a part of such an anticipated day in someone's life."
Two for the price of one... While Nick does most of the primary shooting of staged family shots at Pure Photo, he told us that "Naomi effectively and efficiently directs families in and out of posed shots." Then throughout the rest of the wedding day, they both shoot the day as it happens from two unique perspectives for a wonderful variety of staged and casual images. So, not only do you get one great photographer for your wedding day photo shoot, you get two! Nick could hang out with the guys so they feel more comfortable and Naomi can be with the girls while they're getting ready. Plus, the wedding day is bound to flow smoothly with Nick and Naomi's abilities for what they call "planning combined with artistic vision... We complement each other with art and structure allowing for a beautiful, classy and fun style with a unique edge."
Tamara Ashton would agree that Nick and Naomi balance each other. She had Pure Photo photograph her engagement photos and May 2007 wedding. She told The Ring that "Nick has a great eye for detail and is extremely artistic. His shots are very creative... way better than your standard poses/angles that 'old school' photographers use."
The two views that Nick and Naomi offer is what Michelle Cieplak says she liked best about Pure Photo's style. Michelle hired Nick and Naomi for her August 2008 wedding photos and she told The Ring that "there was always a different perspective on the pictures. Nick and Naomi have very different styles so you are getting two photographers for the price of one." She adds that her wedding party appreciated the direction that Nick and Naiomi offered while taking photos. "They are super efficient and we had gorgeous memories because of it." In fact, Michelle told us that if it wasn't for Nick and Naomi's professionalism and flexibility she wouldn't have chosen a photographer for her wedding, "They were the only photographers that we really trusted when we were on the search for one."
Fresh images for the modern bride... Pure Photo books about ten to twelve weddings per year and say that they don't over book because they like to put a lot of energy into each wedding – energy that Nick says is evident to brides and grooms who choose them for their wedding photos. "Brides choose us because they love what we do and can see that we also love it... We make them happy on their wedding day, and for life, with joyous memories."
Lucy DaSilva was certainly a happy bride on her October 2008 wedding day, which was photographed by Nick and Naomi. "My experience meeting and working with Nick and Naomi was so awesome... they didn't keep asking me questions, they just let us do what was comfortable for us." She added that her wedding photos couldn't have been done better and her and her husband loved everything about them.
Since Nick and Naomi say they bring fun, artistic ability and classiness to each shoot, they attract a variety of clients. "The clients we find most often knocking at our door are the ones that are truly excited," Nick said. "Along with that excitement is always a fun sort of style with colour and edge, and a longing to have a wedding day that is truly unique."
Lucky for brides, Nick and Naomi say that they're best known in the photography industry for originality and efficiency. "We provide an artistic service," added Nick. "What we want to give a couple at the end of the day is a collection of artistic images that can serve as an amazing aid in looking back on one of the greatest days in their life." And if that means that Nick and Naomi need to get a little dirty for that perfect shot, they say they will do it. In fact, that's where most of their wedding photography experience comes from as Nick says they have had a lot of challenging shots from strange angles, as well as large group shots, and everything from small halls to large halls. "We have yet to come across a wedding too large or too small for us to handle." Michelle says that her wedding day photo shoot with Pure Photo felt natural. She told us, "I wasn't uncomfortable at all when they were taking our pictures."
Though Tamara already knew Nick and Naomi as friends before her wedding, she says that working with them was awesome. "They are great people to begin with; but to work with them in a professional manner was a great experience," she told The Ring. "Nick and Naomi are very easy going, creative and fun. They are great listeners and did an amazing job at giving us the shots we really wanted." She added that her photo shoot was so much fun that half the time she and the wedding party weren't even aware that Nick was even taking pictures, which lead to a lot of wonderful, casual shots, which is exactly what she wanted.
Packages&prices The most common question that Nick and Naomi say they are asked by brides and grooms is, "What do we get for the money we spend?" Nick and Naomi say that the price depends on the package that's booked, but no matter what package you book you will always get two photographers, a DVD with all, full resolution printable images and the versatility of having both a male and female photographer. The average bride spends $2500 to $3000 at Pure Photo. "We thought Pure Photo met our budget and more," Lucy told us.
Pure Photo has custom packages to accommodate your specific plans and needs, and offer flexibility in doing so - something that local bride Michelle says she couldn't find anywhere else. "Nick and Naomi were flexible with our needs... I didn't have to settle for a package that we knew we didn't need or couldn't afford."
Pure Photo also offers packages that come with options for your photography needs readily available. Their most popular package is the Wedding Day Package because, Nick says, "it offers a ton of coverage at a great price." With this package you get a consultation to determine your style and expectations, an engagement session, and of course, a second photographer/assistant. Coverage includes unlimited location sites; the final preparations of the day for both bride and groom; photography for the ceremony, family shots and the wedding party; special focus on the bride and groom; photography of the reception, including everything from the first dance to the bouquet toss (which is approximately ten to twelve hours of coverage!); minor re-touching applied to all images and artistic editing on selected images; a portfolio proof book; and a DVD with all, full resolution printable images (minimum of 300 images).
Pure Photo's second package, The Essentials, also offers a consultation and second photographer/assistant. Coverage includes up to three locations; the final preparations of the day for the bride and groom; ceremony, family and wedding party shots (approximately five hours of coverage); minor re-touching of all images and artistic editing on selected images; a portfolio proof book; a DVD with all, full resolution printable images (minimum of 225 images).
Extra goodies... Outside of their packages, Pure Photo also offers a wide variety of albums from traditional leather albums with 4x6 images in plastic sleeves to what Nick describes as "immaculately designed and printed coffee table style albums, as well as smaller parent albums. We can create for you whatever it is you want in an album."
One of Tamara's favourite memories of Pure Photo is receiving the album of her photos and looking at all of the pictures for the first time. "Nick captured so many little details that we otherwise would have forgotten... for example... great shots of special details on the tables."
You can also book an engagement photo shoot if it's not included in your package at the location of your choice or at Pure Photo's studio, which Nick says is fully operational and perfect for all kinds of studio photography. The studio also has a complete custom picture framing shop for all of your framing needs.
Walking you through it... Nick and Naomi told us that it's best to contact them by email to book a consultation. They recommend booking eight months to one year before your wedding, but will accommodate late bookings if possible. At the first consultation with Nick and Naomi (both of whom meet with brides and grooms) you'll look through their albums and portfolio of past work, as well as discuss packages that best suit your needs.
Once you decide to book them, you'll have a second consultation, which is when a deposit of 50% of your package price is due and a contract is signed to ensure your day is secured. You'll also go over a rough schedule of your wedding day, wedding party names and a list of important guests, wedding details, and a list of must-have shots.
"Pure Photo was very accepting to our vision for the wedding. They had everything under control, were on time and all of our needs were met," Michelle told us. In fact, Michelle loved Pure Photo so much that she has already recommended them to another couple, who ended up hiring and loving Nick and Naomi as well.
Since Nick and Naomi combine their planning abilities with their artistic vision, they say that they make it their goal to learn about people and locations before the wedding day. "This allows us to miss nothing and to bring personalities out in images." That's why, during your third consultation (about one to two months before your wedding), you'll meet with Nick and Naomi at your photo location(s) and go over final details.
On the wedding day, Nick and Naomi shoot your photos according to the packages selected at the arranged location(s) and times. After the wedding day, you get proofs of your photos on a disc as well as a proof book – after Nick digitally enhances all of the images and artistically edits select images, of course. You'll meet with Nick and Naomi again about six to eight weeks after your wedding (often sooner), when your disc and proof book will be ready. This is when your remaining balance is due.
To book a consultation... Email Nick and Naomi Law of Pure Photo at info@purephotostudio.net, or phone them at 519-803-3073. They also have a gallery of some of their photography on their website at www.purephotostudio.net.
